Synopsis of book»

England 1810. Young Parson Tobias Campion is excited and nervous to be starting at the small parish of Moreton Priory. But his first night in the village brings excitement of the wrong kind when he has to intervene in the attempted rape of housemaid Lizzie Woodman.

Even in the normal course of events life in the village is far from quiet, as soon Tobias has to deal with both violent and suspicious deaths which put his character and ministry to the test. But matters come to a head when Lizzie disappears from her employers. What has become of the girl, and who is responsible? As Tobias searches for answers he finds himself delving into the dark secrets that haunt Lizzie's past.

'…much more than a run-of-the mill historical crime novel… and the ending took me completely by surprise. By the end I found myself wanting to read more about this engaging young clergyman'Neville Firman, Historical Novels Review

'The book is wracked with social commentary and minutiae on daily life in rural Regency England. This is the coziest of historical tea cozies and, like the best detective stories, the murder and mystery take second precedent to the charm of daily life and the excellent, if soft-handed, characterization of the village people. Rather than spouting facts about the Regency period and some of its social inequalities and atrocities, Cutler, instead, couches her humane and inspiring story within the confines of Regency setting... The people and places and little happenstances of every day life are what colour the outlines of this superbly-written mystery.'A Fair Substitue for Heaven Blog

'A Regency novel with a difference... Judith Cutler has successfully combined the dark world of crime writing with an era that we perceive as being almost universally polite, delicate and graceful... The result is an unusual novel that...will appeal to audiences of both historical fiction and mystery novels.'Curious Books Fans

‘I am thoroughly enjoying [The Keeper of Secrets]it's been such a pleasure reading it I already have got it prominently faced out in our Crime Recommends bay in Glasgow Waterstone's.'Ewan Wilson, Watertone’s Crime Buyer

‘The Keeper of Secrets is an entertaining read. I hope we shall see the Reverand Tobias Campian and Dr Hansard again.’Mystery Women

‘Much more than a run-of-the-mill historical crime novel'Historical Novel Review

‘A well-written, interesting and enjoyable combination of historical mystery and social comment—highly recommended.’Literary Review

‘Rich and entertaining…the deserved breakout for the author of the Josie Welford series’The Observer

‘The narrative rolls out at a cracking pace, the characters are strong and interesting, and the sense of period is streets ahead of most historical crime fiction... I hope we haven't seen the last of the Rev Tobias - more, please.’Andrew Taylor, author of An American Boy
