As we mark D-Day, we're mindful that we're living As we mark D-Day, we're mindful that we're living through something historians call the "post-witness era" โ€” a time when the people who experienced the Second World War first-hand are becoming fewer with each passing year.

That makes memoirs and carefully researched historical fiction more than just stories. They become a way of carrying memory forward: preserving individual lives, ordinary courage, impossible choices, and the human realities behind the history.

These are some of the WWII stories we're reflecting on today, 6th June.

I'll Take That One by Kitty Baxter. Kitty still gives talks at the Imperial War Museum in London. Her memoir recounting her experiences as an evacuee is compelling reading.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธA killer strikes as bombs fall ... Murder at St ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธA killer strikes as bombs fall ... Murder at St Paul's Cathedral by Jim Eldridge is our Ebook of the Month - and just 99p right now.

May, 1941. One of the senior choristers at St Paulโ€™s, Edwin Roberts, is found beaten to death in the crypt of the cathedral and Detective Chief Inspector Coburg and Sergeant Lampson are called in to investigate.

The dead man was far from popular. That, coupled with a small army of staff at work at the famous landmark, including those on the Night Watch striving to protect the cathedral from the worst of the Blitz, means that there is no shortage of suspects. The case is complicated further by links to the top-secret war work being carried out at Bletchley Park and by the black market in rare books and valuable art which casts its shadow over St Paulโ€™s.

When the killer strikes again, St Paulโ€™s is in danger of becoming known as a place of death rather than worship, and Coburg and Lampson are under pressure to get to the bottom of a fiendishly complex investigation.

After the devastating loss of her beloved brother, young Katharine Hepburn determines that she will be famous and never let anyone hurt her again. Leaving behind her East Coast marriage and patrician family, she arrives in 1930s Hollywood determined to live on her own terms.

But the studio system has rules, and Kate โ€“ brilliant, bisexual and fiercely independent โ€“ refuses to follow them.

Moving through a glittering world of power and ambition alongside figures like David and Irene Selznick, Cary Grant, John Ford and Howard Hughes, she forges her own path. Kate faces an impossible choice: become the star Hollywood demands, or risk everything to be the woman she always was.
