Stylist magazine dedicates an issue to me! (Sort of…)

This week’s Stylist is dedicated to holidays for the food obsessed. Which is to say it’s bascially an issue dedicated to me.  In fact, if you were to ask me about my holiday (any holiday), my immediate response would involve enthusiastically describing a series of mouth-watering meals, perhaps punctuated by some other minor attractions…  Holiday highlights invariably surround food: the best moussaka I’ve ever tasted in a shack on the tiny island of Simi (Rhodes);  the local ginger jam in Tanzania (my husband and I raved so much about it, our lovely guide actually gave us a jar as a parting gift); tucking into cocunut-sized buffalo mozzarella in Rome;  sitting on the rocks outside Dubrovnik every night having picnic dinners because we couldn’t get enough of their incredible, fluffy bread; the quaintest moules-frites restaurant in Grenoble;  Mama’s in San Francisco (a brunch haven – worth waiting in line to get in)…  The list goes on.

So, having just recently returned from a business trip in Barcelona with Susie, it is not surprising that I now can think of nothing else but their luscious tapas. This was my second trip to this vibrant city, and I still enthuse about the food at the renowned Paco Meraldo where I dined the first time round. This time dinner was enjoyed at L’Olivé, with a meal that included my favourite obsession pan con tomate (Spain’s version of bruschetta where the tomato is rubbed onto toasted, crusty bread and drizzled with olive oil), wildboar croquettes with a blueberry sauce, sautéed spinach with pine nuts and raisins, melt-in-your-mouth chiperones (fried squid), seafood noodles in squid ink, and breaded scallops… Hungry yet?

I was still digesting this magnificent feast the next next so opted for something lighter for lunch and so it was here, in this city packed with funky and slick restaurants, that I had my first taste of ceviche – ceviche de rap to be exact (fresh raw monkfish marinated in a citrus based juice and plenty of chilli). And now I’m a little bit hooked. And lo and behold, what do I spot in this week’s Stylist? None other than the cookbook The Great Ceviche Book, by Douglas Rodriguez.

See? I told you this Stylist issue was dedicated to me.
