Showing some bookish love this Valentine’s

We are nearing the end of January and the sugary pink displays have popped up: Valentine’s day is fast approaching. But if you’d like to avoid the trappings of what’s arguably the most over-commercialised holiday, I’d like to point you in the direction of International Book Giving Day.

Run entirely by volunteers, the initialive is responding to the sobering statistics that most children in developing countries do not own books and that even in the UK, one-third of children do not own books.

So, why not get involved spreading a little of the love that never dies, a love of books, by pledging to donate books to a second hand shop, library or literacy charity. You could also donate a book to a bare waiting room, or maybe you have a recipient in mind, a friend or relative, who could do with a great read, just because.

There are some talented illustrators on board, who have created some great designs for you to include in your donated books as bookmarks or bookplates. Head over to the website to download either / both of these marvelous images by author & illustrator Nicky Johnston.
