Am I the only one who doesn’t like House?

A friend lent me the entire box set of House recently (I was grieving over the fact I’d just finished the complete series of The West Wing on DVD and would now have to rely on standard TV viewing…) And I have to say I was really looking forward to getting into a new series. I gave it 6 episodes but finally concluded: nope, I really don’t like it.

People have raved about this show and I just don’t get it. I even watched a random episode from series 2 and 3 to see if it was going to get any better, but no, it still failed to engage me.

Problem was, I didn’t find any of the characters (except perhaps Dr Cuddy) particularly convincing – least of all Dr House. And that is a problem when the entire show seems to ride on this sarcasm-spewing character. Otherwise all you’ve got is the solving of the medical mystery which, while a tad interesting, comprises listening to the House-team discuss theories that (seeing as though I’m not a doctor myself) I could not relate to at all. It just got a bit boring after a while.

Dr House may have marvellous lines but I never got the sense that he wasn’t reading off a script.  On the other hand, Dr Cox, from the deliberately less-realistic medical series Scrubs, with his over-blown, bitter rants and caustic demeanor towards his colleagues, well, I find him far more convincing as a real person. Cox pulls it off, House doesn’t.

Am I the only one with this view?

  1. While I do like the show, it is a bit formulaic. Every week, there’s a case. The diagnose it -incorrectly. At about 40 minutes in, they’re sure they’ve got it right, but….no.

Only at the last minute do they save the patient’s life. In between, there’s always a scene with convulsions.

I do like Dr. House, though. 😉
