Description

When the body of a teenage girl is found washed up in the flooded fens outside Cambridge, DI Chloe Frohmann and her partner Morris Keene must work quickly to solve the mystery of her death before the press pounces on the story. Meanwhile, Mathilde Oliver, the autistic daughter of a Cambridge don, is attempting to trace the writer of a series of letters addressed to a student at Corpus Christi College who doesn’t seem to exist. Across the hallowed paths of Cambridge University, Frohmann and Keene follow a sparse trail of clues as the nameless body and the obscure letters lead them to an imposing country manor. Here they begin to unravel a web of secrets, long-buried crimes and fresh horrors . . .

What The Critics Said

'Delicately crafted suspense and elegant characterisation combine in a dark, impressive, and compulsive thriller.'

The Good Book Guide

'Sharp, well observed, and totally engrossing... With a clever mystery that slowly unravels at its heart and will keep you guessing until the end, The Start of Everything is an excellent read and I'll certainly be on the lookout for the next instalment'

Crimesquad

'Completely, compellingly believable and as you get near the end you won't be able to tear yourself away'

The Bookbag

'Utterly captivating and before you realise it, this book becomes impossible to put down. Emily Winslow’s character development is some of the strongest I have seen and the alternating narrative structure is what propels the story’s telling. On more than one occasion I was blind-sided by the events that unfolded… a sure sign of a talented author. I look forward to reading anything this author publishes in the future.'

Booklover Book Reviews

'Fans of Sophie Hannah’s intricate suspense novels and Kate Atkinson’s quirky Jackson Brodie series will find plenty to hold their attention here. It certainly held mine. Emily Winslow is a name to watch.'

Mystery People

'Unusually told from several points of view, including police officers Chloe Frohmann and Morris Keene, and many other characters caught up in the plot, this is a sophisticated and satisfying mystery....I’m already looking forward to the next in the series!'

Booktime (Bertrams)

'Satisfactorily complicated... immediately engaging.'

Bookoxygen

'Uniquely perceptive and penetrating...Emily Winslow is a precise and expert analyst of the darkest parts of the human psyche'
