The first book in the acclaimed Gardella Vampire Chronicles

Vampires have always lived among them, quietly attacking unsuspecting debutantes and dandified lords as well as hackney drivers and Bond Street milliners. If not for the vampire slayers of the Gardella family, these immortal creatures would have long taken over the world.

In every generation, a Gardella is called to accept the family legacy, and this time, Victoria Gardella Grantworth is chosen, on the eve of her debut, to carry the stake.

But as she moves between the crush of ballrooms and dangerous, moonlit streets, Victoria`s heart is torn between London`s most eligible bachelor, the Marquess of Rockley, and her enigmatic ally, Sebastian Vioget.

And when she comes face to face with the most powerful vampire in history, Victoria must ultimately make the choice between duty and love.

What Critics Have Said»

‘So if you are a fan of historical novels keep reading…the one-liner’s won’t leave you wanting, nor would the action. The story makes for a fun frolic through London high society, with balls to attend, suitors to fen off and vampires to stake and a plot to destroy the world to foil. Victoria is a credible heroine and she grows from strength to strength.’My Favourite Books Blog

This is a vampire novel but with a difference, set in the Regency period with the heroine being a plucky young gal by the name of Victoria Gardella Grantworth who has chosen to fight vampires in the name of her family. Her mother and her mother's brother turned down the opportunity to become vampire hunters, this means that Victoria's powers are much stronger as a result. It is a rollicking romping read full of one-liners and the awesome task of killing vampires whilst dressed in regency dresses.
Victoria has the protection of her vis bulla, which turns out to be a navel piercing in the form of a cross (quite funky when you think about it)! I thought that this book was like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but with the added ingredient of the regency period - instead of Giles there is her aunt, Eustacia. The language is appropriate to the period, and there is a lot of "placed herself quite straitly betwixt the two of them." There is some rivalry between Victoria and Max, who is also a vampire hunter, and the mysterious Sebastian Vioglet - is he a vampire or is he not? Perhaps all be revealed in the next two books..... I feel it is much more suitable for a more mature age group, rather than teenagers. It is a fun frothy book and I do look forward to reading the others in the series!Ruth Clements
