Synopsis of book»

A head teacher’s work is never done, especially if, like Jane Cowan, you’re a victim of your own success. Having done well with Wrayford Primary, she’s now expected to bring other neighbouring schools up to scratch as well. And all these responsibilities are compounded by an influx of children, most of whom do not speak English, following their families supplying cheap labour to surrounding farms. Jane can’t turn a blind eye to the conditions in which many of these families are living, even more so when some children simply disappear. When everything points to the shadowy dealings of people smugglers in the area, she has her work cut out for her seeing justice done. And that’s before a threat far closer to home rears his head.

What Critics Have Said»

'The author subtly twists seemingly unrelated incidents into a web that plunges the plot into the raw problems of immigrant trafficking, as well as providing a pacey story with the engaging Jane Cowan. May her career be a long one!'Amy Myers, Shots Mag

‘Judith Cutler always tells a good story … Jane is an engaging character, a strong woman who faces many challenges … I enjoyed the adventures of Jane and the way resolutions were achieved.’, Mystery People

‘She has a knack of creating feisty female lead characters … cosy crime with a realistic and very topical sharp edge … Head Count is authentic and well-researched. … Judith Cutler is not afraid to tackle topical and controversial issues but she does so in an empathetic and accessible way. If you like your cosy crime to be relevant to today’s society, rather than 1930s golden age, Judith Cutler is an author to watch out for.’Sally Jenkins

'A finely crafted plot filled with twists and turns … Head Start is a fast-paced, first-rate puzzle of a mystery with an appealing heroine.’, Kittling Books
