Synopsis of book»

On Easter Day, the Reverend Tobias Campion returns from morning service and discovers a putrefying corpse nailed to a tree. A crown of thorns tops the victim’s head; the face is bludgeoned beyond recognition. Although they are unable to identify the victim, Tobias and his old friend, Dr Hansard, pledge to expose the truth.

But before long, an attempt is made to silence their enquiries; Tobias, injured but no less determined, realises he must be close to the truth. With friends and colleagues either unable or unwilling to help, Tobias is forced to confront his own demons and ask for help from the last person on earth he wants to meet again.

What Critics Have Said»

‘A chilling prologue sets the scene for this gritty, yet elegant, Georgian murder mystery … Campion narrates his memoir with self-deprecating frankness and humour. He accompanies the reader through numerous enigmatic twists with the charm of an amiable companion, an experience that I enjoyed immensely.’Mystery People

‘Do not miss one word when reading this elegant, faultlessly edited, sometimes terrifying and hugely entertaining novel, which deserves high praise for a wonderful but unsparing picture of country life in the early 19th century. Tobias has a host of devotees: a clever, attractive and beguiling young man whose naturally fiery temperament wrestles with humility.’Historical Novels Society
