Richard Ollard

RICHARD OLLARD was born in 1923 in East Yorkshire, attended Eton and was appointed lecturer in History and English at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He then moved to William Collins in 1960 and was a senior editor there for more than twenty years, publishing the likes of Penelope Fitzgerald and Patrick O'Brian. He further established a reputation as a published historian, writing books on the Civil War, Pepys and naval history. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and joint winner, in 1998, of the Heywood Hill literary prize for "a lifetime's contribution to the pleasure of reading". He passed away in 2007.
