Wednesday Cover Story: The Canons

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

I have mentioned many times before that I am a sucker for book “sets” – where various titles have been collected and given special cover designs that follow a similar pattern. And hence not only do they usually provide great reading (there’s usually good reason for publishers to bother revamping such books) but they look great on a bookshelf.

The latest set to have caught my eye are Canongate’s The Canons. Perhaps I thought of these now because I’m currently having to plan submissions for next year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival, and the first 12 titles in The Canons collection were launched at this year’s festival.  Here are just a few of the covers so you see the clever design.

The rather quirky and orginal look for the covers fits nicely with the choice of selected books which Canogate have called ‘highly distictive, wildly eclectic…original and relevant’. That coloured circle that dominated the covers acts like a stamp of approval: yes, this title deserves to be ‘Canonised’. And that big ‘C‘, clearly highlighting the book is part of Canongate’s Collection: The Canons…and yes, that it’s Certainly Covetable.

Going Too Far, by Catherine Alliott. Susie: I rarely read 'girly' books but came across Alliott a few years ago. I've read 3 of her books thus far, and was delighted to spot this one for 30p in a charity shop. I've not opened it as yet but am hoping for another witty, grown-up, middle-class romcom, with lots of 4x4s and country houses!
