Wednesday Cover Story: That woman again…

Last year we posted a blog about this image of a woman from a picture library that almost found her way on to one of Rachel Moore‘s books, and did get used on both the cover of The Island and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.  These copycat covers were highlighted by Horace Bent in The Bookseller some time ago.

Well, it turns out that this woman has cropped up on yet another book – The Lieutenant’s Lover by Harry Bingham. And in the current issue of The Bookseller, there’s a delightful note from the author  who wrote to Horace on the matter (reproduced below):

Dear Horace,

I happened to look more carefully at an old column of yours in which you drew attention to a family resemblance between The Island, and Guernsey literati. But my own The Lieutenant’s Lover looks eerily familiar. The woman in my cover image is intended to be a 45-year-old sergeant in the Red Army, in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. I never knew they were quite so chic.’

Chic or not, 45 or 30-something (as is Juliet Ashton in The Guernsey Literary…), this dark-haired woman certainly gets around…
