I’m back at my desk after a busy day at the London Book Fair yesterday, reflecting on all that took place. As always, there was the inevitable hustle and bustle of a crowed hall, with many people milling about admiring the stands and glorious displays of books, whist others (me included) rushed about helter-skelter between appointments. It was great to meet some new agents and let them know about our list, and to learn about some of the exciting authors they manage (now I’m just waiting for the flood of new submissions to start coming in…), and to meet up with a few familiar faces as we
ll. Which reminds me: I’m not sure if it was madness brought on by exhaustion, but at one stage during the afternoon I could have sworn I kept seeing a very familiar face – that of the one and only Paul Daniels. Every time I turned a corner I seemed to bump into him – if it was him. Embarrassingly, it got the stage where I started smiling at him, convinced that if it wasn’t the magic man himself, it must be someone I knew as he looked so familiar. So, Paul, if you read this and it was you at the Book Fair, I apologise for the inane smiles from the strange blonde girl you kept passing.
After the Book Fair, some of us went to our distributor’s 25th anniversary party. In a packed room at the Scala near Kings Cross, we mingled with the lovely people at Turnaround and listened to the weird but wonderful delights of the Tigerlilies performing on stage. So all in all yesterday was a very eventful, fun day – and one that will hopefully bring some more interesting books our way. It’s a pity the Book Fair is only once a year…
