The lesser known Wimbledon championships

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Yesterday I trekked up to Finsbury Park to watch my other-half run a 10K Charity Race for The Stroke Association. He came third. Me so proud. He was however beaten by a girl. He not so proud.

Anyway…inspired by his efforts and the good cheer at the event, I looked into seeing if there were any other charity sporting events nearer my neck of the woods and here’s what I found:

The Wimbledon Dodgeball Championships 2009 – to be held on Saturday 22nd August.

Oh yes. It seems that for the last few years, a hard-core bunch of sporting activists have gathered together for a day of high Dodgeball competition and this year it’s all in aid of Mencap. All teams are required to be in team fancy dress – and you can already picture the scene now: a park filled with leather-and-lycra-clad Ben Stiller look-a-likes.

It seems the date to enter the competition has closed but I’d suggest skipping the cricket/rugby/football at the pub next Saturday and coming to cheer on something…well, just a little bit different.

Going Too Far, by Catherine Alliott. Susie: I rarely read 'girly' books but came across Alliott a few years ago. I've read 3 of her books thus far, and was delighted to spot this one for 30p in a charity shop. I've not opened it as yet but am hoping for another witty, grown-up, middle-class romcom, with lots of 4x4s and country houses!
