Social media helps the fight against cancer

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a few days ago Everywhere’s #Beatcancer Campaign set a new Guiness World Record for the distribution of the largest mass message through social media.
In the space of 24 hours (between16 - 17th October) they recorded 209,771 social media messages (tweets, facebook updates and blog posts) that included the word #beatcancer. As Mashable reports, with sponsors donating money to various cancer charities for every #beatcancer post, the campaign also managed to raise $70,000.

If anyone needed real proof of the positive effects of social media - there it is.

What to do now?

1. They are still raising money with the #beatcancer hashtag so join in on Twitter now!

2. Check out iVillage’s Breast Cancer Awareness list including links to pictures of landmarks lit up in pink, a cancer quiz, important facts every woman should know and real life stories.
