Selfie-destruct

Most of us have been taking photos of ourselves for years, but it wasn’t until recently that this common phenomenon was given a name: the selfie. Since then, not a day goes by when we don’t either see them posted online or nearly get hit in the face by people too engrossed in getting the best angle of their face to notice the world around them…

Far from being hypocritical (I dabble in selfies occasionally) or selfie-shaming the world, I just think it’s time we take a step back from the selfie obsession for a moment. While waiting for a musical to begin last night, the people in the row in front of me spent a solid twenty minutes taking photos of themselves from every angle its physically possible to hold a camera, both with and without the aid of a stick. No conversation, just constant papping. And the interval was no different. I’m still trying to work out how much they think their appearance would have changed during the first half…

All I’m saying is that why don’t we just stop fixating on how good we can look or how people will perceive our social interactions and just enjoy them? Personally I’d rather remember an event for what it is, not for how I tried to capture it on camera.
