Scarborough-themed musings…

Friday, May 29th, 2009

This must have been one of the shortest weeks ever! Not only did we all have bank holiday Monday off (for once blessed with sunshine, miracle of miracles!), but I booked an extra couple of days off to spend a lovely long break up in gorgeous Yorkshire. Filey – normally a quiet, unspoilt little seaside town – was absolutely heaving with tourists, and in Whitby and Scarborough we virtually had to shuffle along the pavements to get anywhere – almost as bad as Oxford Street at Christmas! Perhaps it was the sun that brought everyone out (it was remarkably hot; who would have thought you could get sunburnt after one day in Yorkshire in May?!), or the tropically warm seas (seriously, almost like bathwater), or maybe it was just everyone saving money and not going abroad for the half term holidays. Whatever the case, the shops and ice-cream sellers were having a well-deserved field day and it was nice to see the beaches so full of colour and laughter.

Whilst in Scarborough, I couldn’t help but spot all the different places Margaret Thornton mentions in her new book, Until We Meet Again, which will be coming out in hardback this November. The castle up on the hill with the Marine Drive curling below, the North and South Bays, the Spa Bridge and beautiful sandy beaches… It’s no wonder Margaret chose such a location as the setting for the romance between Tilly and Dominic, though you’ll have to read the book to find out whether or not their love was able to survive the coming of the First World War. (For those of you that are already Margaret’s fans, Until We Meet Again picks up the Moon family’s life a few years on from the wonderful Remember Me ; but for any new fans out there, don’t worry! You don’t need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one to the full.)

Now sitting back at my desk, having only been in the office for two days, I’m all out of sync and keep getting my days mixed up. I can’t believe it’s Friday already! Back to normal next week though – at least I should know which day’s which by then!

Sara: Corialanus. I love the way Ralph Fiennes has made this story so relevant to modern life, while still retaining Shakespeare's language. I did think Mr Fiennes was guilty of overacting at some points, but I suppose that's what he does...
