Mission accomplished

You’ve got to admit it; over in the sunny U S of A they have a wacky sense of humour. Can you imagine over three thousand people travelling London’s tube network with no trousers on? Definitely not in this weather – I’m wearing at least four layers to work every day at the moment and there’s no way I’m venturing out with anything less on! But that’s exactly what happened on New York’s subway at the weekend, in an annual event that’s now in its ninth year.

The organisers, Improv Everywhere say their goal in life is to ‘bring moments of random happiness and confusion to as many people as possible’, which I think is a great ambition to have – after all, everyone needs a little laughter now and then.

Their long (and ever-growing) list of pranks include ‘Frozen Grand Central’, when over 200 people suddenly ‘froze’ in their positions in the middle of New York’s Grand Central Station; ‘Food Court Musical’, when employees and diners suddenly broke into song and dance just like a real-life musical; ‘Invisible Dogs’ day, when over 2000 people strolled around with pretend dog leashes; and a life-sized game of Risk at a Navy base, when they roped in unsuspecting passers-by to make up the other armies.

These weren’t publicity stunts to try and advertise anything; simply people joining in for the fun of it. A fantastic idea, I think! As I travelled to work this morning, I tried to picture my fellow commuters sans trousers…then wished I hadn’t!

Sara: Corialanus. I love the way Ralph Fiennes has made this story so relevant to modern life, while still retaining Shakespeare's language. I did think Mr Fiennes was guilty of overacting at some points, but I suppose that's what he does...
