Mad for Muddy Boots & Silk Stockings!

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I write this blog in haste because I probably have about another 5 minutes before the phone starts ringing again. Today, from the moment we stepped into the office, we’ve been inundated with calls from readers wanting to buy a copy of Muddy Boots & Silk Stockings, by Julia Stoneham which featured in this month’s issue of People’s Friend magazine as their June Book Club Book. The magazine went on sale yesterday and this book certainly seems to have appealed to every single one of their readers because the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since then! The book follows the lives of ten volunteer Land Girls sent to work on a Devonshire farm, and the magazine calls it  “a wonderful tale of courage, self-discovery and outstanding friendship in trying times” . I had the pleasure of talking to some callers who had been Land Girls themselves – how marvellous! I would go on, but there goes the phone again – musn’t keep the people waiting!

P.S And if you wondered why we didn’t blog yesterday, there’s your answer. Taking calls, calls and more calls…

Going Too Far, by Catherine Alliott. Susie: I rarely read 'girly' books but came across Alliott a few years ago. I've read 3 of her books thus far, and was delighted to spot this one for 30p in a charity shop. I've not opened it as yet but am hoping for another witty, grown-up, middle-class romcom, with lots of 4x4s and country houses!
