How will The Shawshank Redemption suit the stage?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

The Shawshank Redemption is my all-time favourite movie. I have watched it countless times. I have read the novella it is based on by Stephen King – called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and to be found in the collection Different Seasons. I have bought the original screenplay which is interesting since (unlike many screenplays you buy which are simple transcripts of the movie) this is the original script so you can see how things were changed or cut out in the final version of the film. And as the script was written by Frank Darabont who also directed the movie it includes his directoral notes and sketches on how he envisioned capturing the scene on camera.

Now I have tickets to see the new Shawshank Redemption theatre production, playing at Wyndham’s Theatre by Leicester Square. I admit I was a bit hesitant about going (why mess with such a brilliant movie?) but am too curious to see how it is adapted for the stage. I’ll report back in due course…
