Well, my name is Natalie and I am currently in the middle of a two week work placement at Allison & Busby. So today, I am a guest blogger. For any aspiring publisher out there who didn’t know, Allison & Busby offers people the chance to experience life in a publishing house, and provides a much needed opportunity to those who want a career in the industry. And here at Allison & Busby you actually get to do REAL stuff, I’m not just stuck making tea and coffee. So, here I am to tell you all about this ‘stuff’, and I have to say, so far I love it.
I think one of my favourite things about working here is the fact that under the guise of ‘proof-reading’, I have been able to enjoy a sneak preview of novels that have not yet been released. Although it highlights some interesting (and annoying) clichés that exist in particular genres, that I may not otherwise have noticed if, say, reading for pleasure, a really good novel still manages to engross you. One novel that really captured my imagin
ation was Lauren Willig’s The Masque of the Black Tulip, which comes out in September. I found myself desperate to know what was going to happen in it and even sat at home wishing I had it with me. I couldn’t wait to get back to the office the next day and finish it. This is the second book that Lauren Willig has written in this series, and now I definitely want to read her first, The Secret History of the Pink Carnation. This has already been released (in hardback), so I suppose I’ll actually have to go out and buy this one - perhaps I’ll wait for the paperback which is out soon (this July).
Proof-reading is not the only thing I’ve been doing during my time here. I have seen how much work goes into the marketing and publicity side of publishing, and didn’t realise how closely the publishers worked with individual bookshops. This placement has shown me how much more there is to publishing than just the editing side, and has really given me something to think about. Then, obviously, I was asked to write this blog. I did not relish this thought as I didn’t have a clue what to write about, and thought I’d probably just end up rambling on in a particularly boring manner. So to save you all from that fate I’ll stop writing now and go and find something useful to do!

Glad you’re enjoying your time at A&B, Natalie. I’m popping in on Friday to deliver a manuscript. Maybe you’ll be asked to proof-read it and spot all my terrible typos!
Thanks for the Lauren Willig tip. Those are the most beautiful book covers ever!
