Now the weather’s turned fine, if you’re looking for something different to do on your summer evenings, I can definitely recommend going on a family-friendly bat walk. Over at Tottenham Marshes, Lee Valley Bats, give guided walks alongside the canal, which are well worth checking out.
When I went, after tea and biscuits and a brief talk full of bat-facts, we were kitted out with our super sonic detectors and torches before venturing out into the wilderness in search of the flying fuzzballs. We swung our detectors this way and that, pointing them over the water and into the trees, and heard…nothing. At first. But then all of a sudden our detectors burst into life and the leader was able to identify the type of bat by the frequency of ‘clicks’. Clever stuff. Unfortunately, the bats didn’t want to play with us that night; although we heard the sounds of Pipistrelles and Noctules, they all evaded our torch lights. Even so, it was a lovely way to spend an evening. Maybe next time we’ll have better luck!
