First Capital Connect Book Club

Friday, March 19th, 2010

As with many commuters out there, I like nothing better than to have a good moan about the state of the country’s trains. But for once I have something positive to say about First Capital Connect, the train company I rely on to take me to and from work every day. They are, as far as I know, the first train company to set up their own book club!

To mark the launch, First Capital Connect handed out several thousand free 32-page samplers of Jonathan Kellerman’s new book, Evidence, and are giving discounts to commuters who go on to buy a copy from the WHSmith Travel station stores. Unfortunately I missed out on picking up a sampler myself, but as the book club is being run online I can still download the chapters and discount voucher here. And it’s not only high-profile authors they’re promoting – they’ll provide samplers from new and emerging talent as well.

It could well be a ploy to distract the thousands of us travelling into London each day from the trials of commuting, but if a new sampler comes out every month, I’m all for it! April’s book of the month will be This Is How by MJ Hyland, so I’ll be on the lookout for that – it’s got to make for better reading than the free London papers.

The Rose of Sebastopol, by Katharine Mcmahon Lara: Mariella is an interesting protagonist – so far, not your traditional heroine and still second fiddle to the beautiful, enigmatic Rosa. This is the author’s aim I suppose, but I’m still interested to see if Mariella does finally come into her own – or if as readers you’ll always wish the story was told from Rosa’s point of view instead.
