Father’s Day Treats

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

With Father’s Day fast approaching, I’ve been wracking my brains trying to think of a suitable present for my lovely dad.

Dad’s always had a bit of a sweet tooth, and recently in Hertford there’s been a bit of excitement about Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe opening, complete with weighing scales, sweets I haven’t seen in years and row upon row of jars stacked up behind the counter. As soon as I saw it, I was reminded of an old sweet shop, long-since closed, that I used to visit with my dad at the weekends. I  used to love pointing out the jar I wanted and watching my selection being weighed out in front of me, then handed over in little paper bags.

So, this Father’s Day I think I’ll treat my dad to a selection of some of our old favourites – aniseed balls, Pontefract cakes, olde English royal toffee, flying saucers, cough candy, dads herbal tablets, dandelion & burdock crystals… Our dentist won’t approve, I’m sure, but it’ll be a tasty trip down Memory Lane!

Going Too Far, by Catherine Alliott. Susie: I rarely read 'girly' books but came across Alliott a few years ago. I've read 3 of her books thus far, and was delighted to spot this one for 30p in a charity shop. I've not opened it as yet but am hoping for another witty, grown-up, middle-class romcom, with lots of 4x4s and country houses!
