Eric Lampaert steals the show

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Last weekend saw me watching a man screeching and grimacing like an orc from Lord of the Rings.

No, I wasn’t at a Tolkein convention or even an amateur dramatics class - I was at Hertford’s very own comedy club. Cheaper and nearer than Jongleurs - it’s become my comedy venue of choice over the last year.

In the past, the acts have sometimes been a little hit or miss, but this time it surpassed itself, largely due to two fantastic comedians from that night’s comedy line-up: Eric Lampaert (the orc-man) and Stefano Paolini - a human beatbox and Italian charmer. These two are names to watch, I’m sure. They deserve bigger stages than the Hertford Corn Exchange - though I’m glad they paid our little town a visit!

For me, Eric (pictured) stole the show with his craziness and wild leaps of imagination. He had a completely fresh - though perhaps slightly skewed - view on life and his energetic antics had the packed audience hooked on his every word and gesture from the moment he stepped on stage. Picture the gums of a giraffe, legs of grasshopper, scarily long ET-like fingers and the hair of Russell Brand, pacing about the stage like a gangly, hairy lampost (his descriptions, not mine), piercing the eardrums of everyone in the room with his orc-screech, and you’ll get an idea of his wacky stage presence. I haven’t laughed so hard in ages!

The Rose of Sebastopol, by Katharine Mcmahon Lara: Mariella is an interesting protagonist – so far, not your traditional heroine and still second fiddle to the beautiful, enigmatic Rosa. This is the author’s aim I suppose, but I’m still interested to see if Mariella does finally come into her own – or if as readers you’ll always wish the story was told from Rosa’s point of view instead.
