Dinner at eight? If only…

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I feel the need for a little grumble. I had a lovely meal out at Sfizio in Ware the other evening for a friend’s birthday – good food, very drinkable red wine, attentive waiters and even some live music – but as it had gone half ten by the time we were served the main course, it all felt a bit too late in the day to enjoy it to the full.

We’d gone through the stomach-rumbling, eat-my-own-arm-off stage and out the other side, where the thought of eating a big dinner no longer seemed quite so appealing. Which was a pity – the food really was lovely (pasta in a creamy gorgonzola sauce followed by chocolate mousse, mmm!), but you just can’t appreciate it the way you should at that time of night.

And why were we eating so late? Because the restaurant had double booked us. It almost felt like they didn’t trust us to turn up and so had another party booked as back-up. I’m afraid that, nice as it was and despite the complimentary glasses of wine while we were waiting, it has definitely put me off going back there.

Sara: Corialanus. I love the way Ralph Fiennes has made this story so relevant to modern life, while still retaining Shakespeare's language. I did think Mr Fiennes was guilty of overacting at some points, but I suppose that's what he does...
