A tribute to orphans

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

This week is World Orphan Week (6 – 12 February) and so, it seems like a pertinent time to help raise awareness with our own literary spin on the matter and pay tribute to our favourite orphan: the inimitable Mary Russell – otherwise known as Sherlock Holmes’ post-Watson-crime-solving-partner, and wife.

You can join Russell and Holmes on a whole series of escapades (see full list of books here) including the long-awaited reissue of O Jerusalem out this summer, and today of all days, we musn’t forget the special ebook novella Beekeepers for Beginners which features another mysterious orphan…

So on that note, we’re giving away 5 copies of the first book in Mary Russell series The Beekeeper’s Apprentice so enter here by midnight 12 February and take a moment to think about the real-life orphans around the world.

Going Too Far, by Catherine Alliott. Susie: I rarely read 'girly' books but came across Alliott a few years ago. I've read 3 of her books thus far, and was delighted to spot this one for 30p in a charity shop. I've not opened it as yet but am hoping for another witty, grown-up, middle-class romcom, with lots of 4x4s and country houses!
