A bartender's son, MICKEY SPILLANE was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1918. After a truncated college career, Spillane became a writer of comic books before this avenue was cut short by WWII and his new job as a fighter pilot instructor. After the war, Spillane converted an unused comic book project into the first of his trademark hard-hitting, sexy novels featuring hard-as-nails PI Mike Hammer. Spillane won numerous awards and the Hammer books have sold in their millions and were the first private-eye novels to grace the New York Times bestseller lists. He passed away in 2006.
